Meet the Heart of Open Hand
Here at Open Hand Atlanta, we love our volunteers. They are the heart of what we do; and we definitely couldn’t cook, package, and deliver around 4,700 healthy meals a day to homebound and chronically ill individuals in need around the city without their hard work! Last year, Open Hand had over 14,000 individuals volunteer with us. That’s between 40 and 100 generous people who give of their time every single day.
And our Volunteers of the Month are no exception.
Meet Juan Alvarez, his mom Anita Mesa, and Anita’s friend Victoria Henao. Juan began volunteering with us last August through Northside Hospital and has since completed a whopping 300 hours! He had so much fun that he invited his mom, Anita, who then invited her friend Victoria and they have been coming in every Monday to pack meals ever since. They also enjoy volunteering with their church, St. Andrews, Notre Dame Academy, and St. Pius X.
When asked about their time volunteering with us, Juan said, “We are all from Columbia and foreign to the U.S., but the employees at Open Hand have adopted us and made us feel like part of the family. We know we are making an impact every time we step into the kitchen. And we never have the Monday blues because we start the week on the right foot.”
Thank you, Juan, Anita, and Victoria for being a part of the Open Hand family!
