GMM has a new Culinary Dietitian!
Introducing Good Measure Meals’ and Open Hand’s newest Culinary Dietitian, Morgan McFarlane!
We are excited to have Morgan’s skills and enthusiasm for nutrition and community wellness on our team, as well as her commitment to our greater mission of helping and empowering others.
“I started my personal health journey around the same time I started at the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga for pre-pharmacy.
To back-track, I grew up in a family that loves food; so I grew up loving food (and eating a lot of food) but not so much loving exercise. This love for food but not exercise caused me to be overweight/obese until I was 18. My ‘ah-ha’ moment during my senior year of high school made me realize how unhealthy of a life I was leading, so I started decreasing my portion sizes and slowly started exercising (10-15 minutes a day). Over time the weight was steadily coming off, my exercise sessions were lasting longer, and I was falling in love with learning about nutrition.
The summer before my sophomore year of college, while volunteering in a hospital pharmacy, I discovered the career of a registered dietitian and knew immediately I wanted to pursue this as a career.
In the past six years, I have been able to lose and keep off around 55 pounds due to small lifestyle changes. I love being in a field that allows me to constantly learn about nutrition and be in a healthy mindset.
When I graduated college in 2013, I moved to Washington, D.C. to complete my distance dietetic internship. While I wasn’t brunching with the Obamas, I was busy completing my internship at various locations around D.C. My longest rotation was at an amazing non-profit, D.C. Central Kitchen (DCCK). I could write paragraphs and paragraphs of the amazing work going on at DCCK but to save some space I will just recommend visiting their website.
I loved DCCK so much that this past summer, I went back to work with them until I moved a little closer to home to the Atlanta area. I was pleasantly surprised when the job posting for the culinary dietitian popped up at Good Measure Meals/ Open Hand Atlanta, and instantly knew this was the position for me. Right after I applied for the job, I came to visit and signed up to start volunteering right away! Over the last year I have found my true passion in the non-profit world.
Being able to combine my passion for nutrition and my passion for helping and empowering others is the ideal setting for me and I am so thankful to be able to work for Open Hand!”
