Cooking Skills: How to Steam Veggies

Summertime is high season for farming, and beautiful veggies are filling out the stalls at all the local farmers markets. But what do you do with all that corn (and peppers, and broccoli, and more)?

Steaming is a quick and easy way to prepare healthy, nutritious vegetables. This cooking method helps preserve the flavor, texture and water-soluble vitamins in vegetables, and since you don’t have to add oil to protect the veggies/cookware like you would when roasting or sautéing, you can keep the calories down as well.

You also don’t need any fancy equipment. Just a microwave, microwave-safe bowl, some plastic wrap, and water.

Just follow the steps below to steam your veggies in the microwave.

Step 1: Put your veggies in a microwave safe bowl with a Tablespoon of water

Step 2: Put plastic wrap around the bowl leaving one side peeled back to leave an opening

Step 3: Heat in microwave for 5 minutes or until a little soft. Remove from bowl and enjoy!
