Spotlight on: Open Hand Nutrition Walks
Looking to kick-start your fitness plan for 2014? Have nutrition questions you’d like answered? Simply looking for an excuse to scope out the new BeltLine? If so, you should check out Nutrition Walks on the Atlanta BeltLine, led by our very own Open Hand dietitians.
Program coordinator and Registered Dietitian Jamie Hamblin sat down with us this month to answer some questions about the walks and how you can get involved.
Q: Who should be interested in these nutrition walks?
Anyone! If you like getting outside, connecting with community members, talking about health (or not), or having some friends help walk your dog, I think the walks are great.
Q: As a first-timer, what could I expect from a walk?
The walks are pretty laid back. We want people to feel comfortable participating no matter their fitness level or health interests. We are not there to lecture anyone about what to eat! We’d love to serve as a resource for our communities. And we know that not many people have the time or finances to make an appointment with a dietitian, so it’s really a great opportunity to get your nutrition questions answered – for free!
Q: Why did you choose to host the walks on the BeltLine?
The Beltline has been offering free fitness classes in an effort to engage and strengthen the community along the trail. The dietitians leading the groups live along the BeltLine, so it just seemed like a great avenue for engaging our own neighborhoods in physical activity and conversations about health.
Q: Where and when are the walks held?
The walks are held at three different times and locations along the BeltLine, and they are each led by a different dietitian. One meets Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at the Park Tavern parking lot, one meets on the eastside of the trail at H. Harper Station on Thursdays at 9:00 AM, and I lead the one which meets at the Washington Park tennis center on Thursdays at 7:30 AM.
Q: Okay, I’m convinced. Where do I register?
You do not need to register. You can sign in when you show up!
