GMM Partners with Atlanta Cancer Support Community
GMM Culinary Specialist and Nutrition Coordinator Ashley Ritchie hosts healthy cooking demonstrations for cancer patients.
Twice a month, I pack up some cooking equipment, groceries and recipes and head to the Cancer Support Community (CSC) to teach a cooking class. CSC is an amazing nonprofit organization that provides a variety of supportive services for cancer patients and their families free of charge! In addition to cooking classes, they provide nutrition education programs, a variety of stress reduction and exercise classes, and fun social activities. I absolutely love being a part of this wonderful organization.
I’ve been teaching at CSC since 2011, and over the years, these cooking classes have become very special to me.
I’ve gotten to know several of the regular attendees, and they tell me that the cooking classes have really inspired them to cook more frequently at home. They also share the difference CSC has made on their choices by encouraging them to purchase foods that support their health, which is my main goal for the cooking classes.
I don’t try to show off flashy cooking techniques, or time-consuming “upscale” dishes. As a representative of Good Measure Meals, it is my goal to teach the participants how to make easy and nutritious food that they can replicate on a busy weeknight at home. In addition to easy cooking techniques that can be translated to a variety of foods, the main topics during our class discussions are based on health benefits of cancer-fighting foods and the value of specific foods for general health.
I have taught a wide range of topics: Anti-Inflammatory Foods, Summer Entertaining, Essentials to Homemade Pizza, Antioxidant Rich Desserts, Ancient Grains, Simple Gourmet Vegetable Side Dishes, and Indian Flavors Made Easy, and Naturally Sweet Summer Desserts. In August, I taught folks how to utilize the abundance of summer’s raw vegetables to keep the oven turned off when cooking. Many of the recipes from my classes can be accessed on the CSC website, by clicking here.
If you or someone you know has cancer, please tell them about the wonderful programs at CSC! For more information, visit their website or sign-up to attend a new members meeting by calling 404-843-1880.
